Nature's Pharmacy

Who hasn’t had one of these? A toothache can be caused by stress or anxiety, but it is generally caused by bacteria infecting the tissue at the base of the tooth. The pain is the irritated nerve sending a signal that something is awry.

What to Do

Make an appointment to see a good dentist. In the meantime, try any of the following:

  • You can alleviate and often cure a toothache by applying poultices of herbs directly to the site of infection.
  • Clove oil applied topically is an effective analgesic for toothaches, helping to relieve the pain.
  • Valerian, if taken in sufficiently high dosages (½ teaspoon of the tincture every half hour), will also help lessen the pain.
  • Spilanthes, too, has antiseptic and analgesic properties and is my favorite remedy for easing the pain of toothaches.
  • Make a mouth rinse of spilanthes and use it frequently.
  • Employed on a regular basis, it will also help with longterm tooth and gum health.
  • Tea tree essential oil applied directly to the site of pain combats infection.

Toothache Poultice

Substitute chaparral in this formula if organically grown goldenseal is not available.

  • 2 parts spilanthes powder
  • 1 part goldenseal powder (organically cultivated)
  • 1 part myrrh powder
  • 1 drop clove essential oil
  • Combine the herb powders with enough water to make a thick paste. Add the clove essential oil as an analgesic and antiseptic.
  • Make a small cylinder-shaped poultice using sterile gauze, and apply directly to the affected area.

Healing Mouthwash

This mouthwash has helped lessen my trips to the dentist. Use daily.

  • ¾ cup water
  • ¼ cup vodka
  • 4 dropperfuls (1 teaspoon) spilanthes tincture
  • 2 dropperfuls (1/2 teaspoon) calendula tincture
  • 2 dropperfuls (1/2 teaspoon) goldenseal (organically cultivated) or chaparral tincture
  • 1 dropperful (¼ teaspoon) myrrh tincture
  • 1–2 drops peppermint essential oil
  • Mix the water and vodka. Add the tinctures and peppermint essential oil and shake well.
  • To use, dilute several tablespoons of the mixture in ½ ounce of water, and use as a mouthwash.

The divine scriptures are God’s beacons to the world. Surely God offered His trust to the heavens and the earth, and the hills, but they shrank from bearing it and were afraid of it. And man undertook it.
