One of the most common ailments afflict humankind, diarrhea is characterized by loose, watery bowel movements. This problem can be caused by factors such as infection, parasites, an unbalanced diet, and even stress. While everyone experiences diarrhea from time to time, if you have chronic diarrhea, you should consult a holistic health care practitioner or a physician.
What to Do
Blackberry root tincture is my favorite remedy for diarrhea. At the first signs of diarrhea, take ½ teaspoon of the tincture every half hour until symptoms subside. If blackberry root is not available, any strong astringent such as white oak bark, witch hazel bark (not the extract sold in pharmacies), or raspberry leaf will do. Black tea also works in a pinch.
At the same time that you’re trying to dry things up, use teas or tinctures of mucilaginous herbs such as marshmallow or licorice to soothe irritated bowels. For example, try a tea made with two parts blackberry root and one part licorice root; drink 3 to 4 cups daily. If the diarrhea is persistent, add chaparral or goldenseal to the tea. Combine any of these herbs with oatmeal porridge for a soothing, edible remedy.
It is essential to drink sufficient quantities of water when you’re experiencing diarrhea; it is very easy to become dehydrated. Squeezing the juice of a fresh lemon into the water is even better. Be especially mindful of hydration with small children, and ensure that their liquid intake is sufficient (several cups of water a day in addition to their medicinal tea).
